Reconnecting with yourself

As summer presses on, we need to find ways to reconnect with ourselves. Our day-to-day activities and the stresses of life seem to have used up our ebbing strength. Our focus is almost always on anyone or anything but ourselves. It’s time to slow down, re-gather; re-create; reconnect with ourselves.

Reconnecting gives us an opportunity to celebrate and be grateful for the many gifts and blessings in our lives and discover again what really drives us and gives us purpose and meaning.Enjoy-the-silence

There are many ways we reconnect with ourselves. I want to suggest just two. The first is to find your voice in music, especially one or two good meaningful, powerful songs. When we were children, our voices were raw and unadulterated. Our voices were loud, strong, and for all intents and purposes, there was no filter when we spoke. As adults, so much of our inner voice is filtered and we seldom connect with our inner self. A song that speaks powerfully to us can help us connect to the “wild voice” within; a voice we will recognize if we listen.

The next suggestion is to find time to be silent. “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Silence and solitude allow us to simply “be”. It gives us another channel to listen to our inner voice and connect with the Divine. Silence and solitude settles us and we can find serenity.

So this summer, find your voice in song and then be silent and listen
