Lubbock, Texas: Texas Tech University officials issued an alert saying the suspect, Hollis Alvin Daniels, 19-year-old Communication Arts student accused of fatally shooting a Texas Tech University police officer at the campus police station Monday night, was taken into custody by police and that the campus lockdown order had been lifted.
In an earlier statement, the university spokesman Chris Cook said that Texas Tech University campus police made a student welfare check Monday evening and, upon entering the room, found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Officers then brought the suspect, Hollis Daniels, to the police station for standard debriefing.
While at the station, Chris Cook said the suspect pulled out a gun and shot an officer in the head, killing him. Hollis Daniels then fled on foot before being apprehended a short time later.
Texas Tech officials initially issued a lockdown alert to students on social media, urging those on campus “to take shelter in a safe location.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statement about the shooting late Monday, saying “hearts go out to the family of the police officer killed.” Abbott also said he had mobilized state law enforcement resources to aid in the investigation.
Hollis Alvin Daniels hails from a prominent family of theater owners in Seguin, Texas and was a communications arts student, according to his Facebook page. He was taken into custody around 9:30 p.m. after fleeing on foot. The shooting caused panic throughout the locked down campus. His father is a former city councilman from a family with long roots in the small seguin community where he is from. His prominent family ran a chain of movie theaters for years.
Online arrest records showed that Hollis Alvin Daniels was allegedly arrested by Texas Tech campus police in September 2016. The alleged offenses were drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia. It’s not clear how the case was resolved. Some local news sites reported that Daniels was a freshman, although this could not be confirmed in light of the 2016 campus police arrest.
Hollis Alvin Daniels’ mugshot was also taken in another jurisdiction for a traffic offense.
