Trump Quietly Signed Bill Revoking Obama-Era Gun Checks For People With Mental Illnesses

President Trump quietly signed a bill into law – without a photo op or fanfare – rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun. The Obama-era rule which Trump revoked followed the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 first graders and six others dead. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns.

The rule added people receiving Social Security checks for mental illnesses and people deemed unfit to handle their own financial affairs to the national background check database.

Had the rule fully taken effect, the Obama administration predicted it would have added about 75,000 names to that database.

Both the House and Senate passed the new bill, H.J. Res 40, revoking the Obama-era regulation which the president signed without the usual photo op, fanfare or cameras in the oval office.

Trump’s action from last February has come to light following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Wednesday by 19-year-old Nikolaus Cruz – a former student at the school – that left at least 17 dead and 14 injured.

Trump on Thursday morning suggested that mental illness was a factor in the shooting, which 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz has confessed to carrying out.

“So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior,” Trump tweeted. “Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!”

In a related development, the leader of a white nationalist group – Republic of Florida – has reportedly confirmed that Nikolaus Cruz, the suspect in the Florida school shooting was member of his organization.

Jordan Jereb, leader of the Republic of Florida (ROF) group, told AP that Cruz “acted on his own behalf of what he just did and he’s solely responsible for what he just did.”

Jereb also said Cruz had “trouble with a girl” and he believed that it wasn’t a coincidence the attack was carried out on Valentine’s Day.

The ROF calls itself “a white civil rights organization fighting for white Identitarian [sic] politics, and the ultimate creation of a white ethnostate.”

The group has previously called for Floridians to pick up arms against the government, fight for secession and revive a white “ethno-state”
