Detroit, Michigan: Dewayne Jones, a Detroit police officer has been convicted of misdemeanour assault and battery in the beating of a naked, unarmed and mentally ill woman inside an emergency room triage unit. Jurors in Wayne County delivered the guilty verdict Tuesday against 47-year-old Dewayne Jones. Jones also was charged late last year with felony misconduct, but that was dismissed.
The alleged assault was captured on cell phone video that went viral, showing Jones and the nude female patient fighting.
The woman was experiencing mental health issues and was brought to the hospital for treatment on August 1, 2018.
That evening investigators said the woman was spitting and shouting profanities. It’s alleged she also bit one police officer on the forearm and thigh.
Investigators allege that when Jones attempted to restrain the woman, he punched her in the face and upper body.
“I counted 12 or 13 punches,” said Holman. “He was the only one who punches her.”
Several officers were trying to subdue the woman who was spitting and biting.
Jones and his partner transported the naked woman from the area of Lincoln and Brainard to Detroit Receiving Hospital for mental health treatment.
Defense attorney Pamella Szydlak, who is representing Corporal Jones, told jurors that Detroit Police officers are under assault everyday on the street and in courtrooms.
Video of the incident posted in August on WJBK-TV’s website shows the 29-year-old woman being punched about a dozen times at Detroit Receiving Hospital as another officer and hospital security restrained her. Witnesses testified that the woman spat at Jones, shouted profanities at hospital staff and bit an officer.
Jones was suspended, but later reinstated at a lower rank. He could receive up to 93 days in jail at his May 1 sentencing.
