Houston, Texas, USA: Former President George H.W. Bush was discharged from Houston Methodist Hospital Friday evening, his spokesman Jim McGrath reported.

Bush’s son, Jeb piggybacked off of McGrath’s tweet Friday night. The former presidential candidate and Florida governor must be pleased with his 93-year-old father’s recovery.

Thanks for all of your prayers. Dad is doing well and headed home — Jeb Bush (@JebBush) May 5, 2018

Signs of his restlessness to leave the hospital appeared in a tweet Thursday after the hospital held a ceremony naming its atrium in honor of him and his recently deceased wife, Barbara.

Quite moved by this announcement by @MethodistHosp. The atrium is beautiful, but recent developments notwithstanding I have not taken up residence here. The doctors, nurses and support staff are so nice, but the second I get the green light I’m outta here — George Bush (@GeorgeHWBush) May 3, 2018

President George H.W. Bush was admitted into the hospital on April 22, the day after his wife of 73 years, Barbara was buried.

Now Bush is looking forward to spending  the summer at his family home in Kennebunkport, Maine. A yearly summer tradition, this will be his first without the former first lady at his side. Last year, about this time, they arrived in Kennebunkport after the former president was released from the hospital after a battle with pneumonia. The Bushes spend their summers in Maine, typically heading back to Houston in October.

EARLIER: Former President George H.W. Bush Hospitalized For Infection – “President Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital yesterday morning after contracting an infection that spread to his blood,” George H.W. Bush’s office spokesman Jim McGrath, said in a statement on Monday. “He is responding to treatments and appears to be recovering. We will issue additional updates as events warrant”

President George H.W. Bush, 93, was hospitalized less than a day after the funeral of former first lady Barbara Bush, who died Tuesday at age 92. More than 1,500 friends and family members attended the private service at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston to pay their respects.

Barbara Bush had congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the years before her death.

The 41st president mourned his wife of 73 years in a statement, calling her “a woman unlike any other.”

“Barbara Bush was a fabulous First Lady and a woman unlike any other who brought levity, love, and literacy to millions,” he said. “To us, she was so much more. Mom kept us on our toes and kept us laughing until then.”

The former first lady’s funeral was attended by former Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Bill Clinton, along with first lady Melania Trump and former first ladies Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.

Both President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush had been hospitalized off and on over the past couple years. The former president was hospitalized in January 2017 and again April 2017, both times for pneumonia.

Bush, the oldest-living former president — and longest-lived president in U.S. history — has vascular parkinsonism, a form of Parkinson’s disease.
