The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, says that beginning in 2018 Resident Doctors (House Officers) , will be placed centrally by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria across health institutions in the country. Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole said the goal of the facilitation by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria is to end the suffering being faced by young Nigerian doctors. According to Prof Isaac Adewole the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria MDCN will from 2018 implement central programme to place, post & fund available 4,461 housemanship/internship training spaces across Nigeria
Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole said the request by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria which was presented to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) by the the Ministry of Health was approved at a meeting meeting presided over by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday.
The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole also said:
“At today’s meeting, Council considered a memorandum from the Federal Ministry of Health to centrally coordinate, place and fund the placement of house officers in accredited health institutions across the country. By this singular act, the suffering of thousands of Nigerian young doctors will be put to an end,”
The announcement by the minister is short on specifics but would seem to be patterned after the National Residency Match Program (NRMP) in the United States which places applicants for postgraduate medical training positions into residency programs at teaching hospitals throughout the United States
