UK Supermarkets Recall Frozen Vegetables Over Listeria Contamination – FSA

by Kim Boateng Posted on July 6th, 2018

London, UK:  A number of supermarket chains have been forced to recall thousands of bags of branded frozen vegetables due to possible contamination with Listeria , the UK Food Standards Agency, FSA said.

The Food Standards Agency said 43 frozen products, including sweetcorn and mixed vegetables – sold by retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl – had been recalled by Greenyard Frozen UK Ltd, one of the largest suppliers of fruit and vegetables.

It is feared the frozen vegetables could contain listeria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis, a rare illness responsible for the death of two people in the UK last year.

Greenyard Frozen UK Ltd has provided an amended product list, detailed below.

No other Greenyard Frozen UK Ltd products are known to be affected, FSA says.

“We take this very seriously. We stopped our production in Hungary for an in-depth review and will not restart before the root cause is found and eliminated.” Greenyard Frozen UK Ltd said

FSA Risk statement

The products listed above might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years of age, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies less than one month old and people with weakened immune systems.

Action taken by the company, Greenyard Frozen UK Ltd

Greenyard Frozen UK Ltd are recalling the above products. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought any of the products listed above.

FSA advice to consumers

If you have bought any of the above products do not eat them. Instead, return the product to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.

About FSA product recalls and withdrawals

If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product). The FSA issues Product Withdrawal Information Notices and Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food. In some cases, a ‘Food Alert for Action’ is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.

Listeria Outbreaks In Europe

Since 2015, there have been 47 reported cases, nine of which were fatal. Outbreaks have also affected Austria, Denmark, Finland and Sweden.

Last week the Hungarian food safety authorities banned the sale of frozen vegetables produced by a Greenyard plant in Hungary over the past two years. It also ordered retailers to withdraw the products from their shelves and alert customers in an effort to contain the outbreak. All freezing activity at the plant has been stopped.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) said it had detected strains of listeria in products manufactured at the processing plant as far back as 2015. This suggests strains of the bug have persisted in the factory despite cleaning and disinfection procedures being carried out.

Initially the source of the bacteria was thought to be sweetcorn, but EFSA said it was possible that other vegetables were also contaminated.
