KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: A 30-year-old woman was convicted of rape in the Eshowe Regional Court yesterday. The woman was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping her 10-year-old cousin at a family gathering.
According to KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane the woman was invited to a birthday party of the victim’s younger brother in Maqhwakazi area last year.
“After the party, family members, (including) the victim and the accused went to sleep in a rondavel.”
However, in the middle of the night the accused was caught raping the boy where they were sleeping.
He said when the boy was questioned about the alleged rape, he confided in his mother that he was raped twice before by the same woman.
A case of rape was opened at Eshowe police station for further investigation.
After an intensive investigation by the Eshowe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit members, the accused was arrested the following month and she was charged for rape.
“This will send a strong message to other criminals who might be involved in such criminal activities,” said Zwane.
