Otero County, Colorado: Christine Martinez, a Manzanola woman is accused of trying to kill her two daughters by driving off a road with the children in her SUV and crashing the vehicle into the Arkansas River.

Christine Martinez, 33, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, child abuse and arson, according to a Colorado Bureau of Investigation news release.

Martinez was arrested Tuesday and is being held at the Otero County jail. Her bail is $50,000.

Martinez allegedly tried to kill her two daughters, ages 8 and 10, at her Manzanola home, the CBI said. Otero County sheriff’s investigators told reporters she’s suspected of stabbing her 8-year-old and 10-year-old daughters at their home in Manzanola on March 31 before leaving them in the vehicle. She’s accused of then driving into the Arkansas River.

She then put the children in her SUV during the morning of March 31 and drove on Colorado 207, leaving the roadway and crashing into the river.

A passer-by called 911, and the girls were rescued from the vehicle. Martinez was found outside the SUV. All three were taken to a hospital, treated for serious injuries and released.

Martinez is scheduled to appear in Otero County District Court on April 24.
