Wilmington, Delaware: Kyle R. Merena, a naked, Harrisburg man who led police on a high-speed chase through oncoming traffic on I-95 has been charged with driving under the influence, police said.
Pennsylvania State Police said they clocked the SUV at 90 MPH during the Wednesday night chase that started in Wilmington around 7 p.m. and ended near the Philadelphia International Airport after police used a spike strip to slow the SUV.
Police charged the driver, 29-year-old Kyle R. Merena, with reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, failure to obey traffic, failure to keep right, disregarding traffic lanes, fleeing police and a DUI on a controlled substance.
The chase began when Delaware state troopers responded to an SUV driving the wrong way on I-95 near the Martin Luther King Blvd exit. Troopers tried to pull over the SUV, but the vehicle kept traveling south in the northbound lanes until it reached the Delaware Service Plaza, police said.
The dark green Ford Escape got back on I-95 in the north lanes toward Philadelphia, but hit heavy traffic near the Harvey Road exit and crossed the grassy median into oncoming traffic in the south lanes.
In Pennsylvania, the spike strip was spread out and deflated the SUV’s tires, but the driver kept going, Pennsylvania State Police said.
The vehicle only stopped when it crashed into a trooper’s car, just south of the Philadelphia International Airport.
Merena got out, completely naked, and attempted to flee, and was arrested after a brief chase, police said.
He was taken to Crozer-Chester Hospital for evaluation, before being jailed at the Delaware County Prison.
His cash-only bail was set at $250,000, according to court documents.
This was the third Delaware police chase into Pennsylvania this month.
On Wednesday morning, Wilmington police began chasing a car in the city driven by a man wanted for questioning in a homicide.
The chase continued onto I-95 and into Pennsylvania, where the car rammed into another car near the airport and a Wilmington patrol car crashed and rolled over. The driver, identified by police as Dejuan Robinson, 20, who has ties to Wilmington’s Touch Money Gang, escaped.
Two officers were treated and released for injuries, and occupants of the third car were also were injured.
Earlier this month, a Bear man’s car crashed and killed three people, two of whom were part of a Mummer’s Day Parade marching band.
