New York City, USA: 42-year-old Alain Samba, a New York correction officer, currently in custody has been charged with criminal negligence homicide in the shooting death of his girlfriend, a 35-year-old woman Marie Faye. A Nurse of Senegalese descent, Marie Faye was killed with a single shot in his Ogden Avenue, Bronx apartment early Thursday morning and the correctional officer, Alain Samba, claims, in his defense, that his weapon was triggered accidentally. The correctional officer said that he was cleaning the gun and that he accidentally shot Marie Faye.

Alain Samba was taken into custody after the woman was shot in the left side of her chest in his sixth-floor apartment on Ogden Avenue near University Avenue in Highbridge just before 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Medics took the 35-year-old victim to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where she died.

The early morning single gun shot woke sleeping residents living in the Bronx apartment building on Ogden Avenue and Jose Perez, the building’s janitor, said “She was smiling all the time, I can not say a negative thing about her. She was a fantastic person, her nursing career was taking off, I can not believe it happened”.

She was Senegalese and sources said Samba has been a correction officer for just over a year and is assigned to Rikers Island.

“He works a lot,” said one neighbor who declined to give her name. “I don’t see him much because he’s always working.”

She said the officer has two children, a girl and a boy between 10 and 12 years old.

Both children live with their biological mother but used to visit their father fairly regularly.

“He’s a good father from what I’ve seen,” she said. “The children stay with him but I haven’t seen them in there in the longest time.”

Sources claim Alain Samba the shooter is Congolese.
