Trayvon Martin Would Have Been 23 Today

by Kim Boateng Posted on February 5th, 2018

Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17 year old black teenager, shot and killed in Florida on February 26, 2012 as he was walking home with candy and a can of juice in hand and talking on the phone with a friend – by so called neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman – would have turned 23 today. Trayvon Martin has become a symbol of social justice activism even as Trayvon’s murder is a stark reminder of the vulnerability of black lives in a country that still needs to be reminded they matter.

His murderer, George Zimmerman, who was not even a police officer walked free.

George Zimmerman walked free, reminiscient of the way the murderers of so many black people have gone Scot free. The killers of Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, Freddie Gray and Amadou Diallo also all walked free.

Trayvon Martin Lives in all of us. We are indeed Trayvon Martin. Happy Birthday and Rest In Peace.
