Tradedy struck a community in Makurdi, Benue State, Nigeria today as two sisters were burnt to death after their elder sister, a teenager, put a padlock on the outside of the room they all shared and sneaked out in the middle of the night to meet her boyfriend. The teenager returned to meet a crowd gathered in front of their home and the bodies of her two sisters burnt to death as they could not get out of the house due to the padlock that “Juliet” placed on the door when she left for her rendezvous. It has not been ascertained how the fire started.

According to eyewitnesses, the teenager said she locked the door on the outside with a padlock around midnight and headed to her boyfriend’s house with the aim of coming back early as usual. She said she had been doing this for a long time. She said she locks the door so as not to wake up her younger sisters when she returned. She said they were deep sleepers and she would usually return and keep knocking for a long time before either would wake up, prompting her to start locking the door on the outside and coming back early enough for them not to even notice she was gone in the first place.

A neighbor who was alerted by smoke from the fire rushed to the scene, broke the padlock to the door and found one of the girls dead while the other was breathless and barely clinging to life. Together with others who had arrived at the scene at this time, the child was rushed to the hospital but she unfortunately gave up the ghost.

Her corpse were returned home immediately without delay and placed besides the body of her late sister. “Juliet” returned from her boy friends house at approximately six in the morning and met hundreds of people in the house, together with the bodies of her two sisters.

When her boyfriend, “Romeo”, also a teenager came around, he was beaten and could have been killed by the crowd, but for the pleas of “Juliet” who told them to leave the boy alone as he had done nothing wrong.

Nigeria Circle could not ascertain why the parents of the three girls were not with them the night this tragedy unfolded but the girl’s parents later arrived and the bodies of the two girls have been taken to the village for burial.
