David James Smith, a British man will be spending the next 10 months behind bars for trying to smuggle crack cocaine and heroin hidden under his foreskin into a woman’s prison for his girlfriend.
David James Smith was sentenced after pleading guilty to charges of conveying an article into prison and failing to surrender. According to the U.K. Examiner, the recovering drug addict was caught with the narcotics while visiting his girlfriend in the HMP New Hall prison in Flockton, near Wakefield, England, on April 23, 2015.
Those in attendance at Leeds Crown Court heard the 39-year-old Smith went through security while at the prison, agreeing to a full body search.
Prosecutor Michael Greenhalgh told court during the search about $17 worth of heroin and crack cocaine were found in blue wrapping under the man’s foreskin.
Smith told court he bought the drugs in a bus station in Wakefield, took them in the bathroom and stashed them somewhere in an effort not to be robbed.
“I did not want no one stealing my drugs,” Smith said.
Smith said he hid a needle and spoons in a bush outside the prison, which he showed facility staff after being caught. The man claimed the narcotics were for personal use and thought he was having a closed visit with his partner, which was a perfect opportunity to smuggle it to her.
“I didn’t want her to know I had messed up,” he said, insinuating he had a drug relapse.
The court heard Smith had been abusing drugs since age 16. Smith’s lawyer Howard Shaw said the man had been off heroin for a number of years but would occasionally relapse.
Smith is currently on a methadone prescription.
