Cheik Tiote’s Body Flown To Ivory Coast After Emotional Beijing Memorial

Preceding his expected burial in the Ivory Coast, a memorial service for Former Newcastle and Cote d’Ivoire international midfielder Cheick Tiote has been held in the Chinese capital, Beijing. During the memorial service, his Beijing Enterprises team-mates stood around a coffin dmolested in the flag of the Ivory Coast with their heads bowed in respect, before his body was flown back to the African country.

Family and friends openly wept at the emotional service for the father of three, who played over 100 games in the Premier League for the Toon before moving to Asia.

Fans outside carried a banner saying “RIP” with Tiote’s face and chanted his name, while soldiers saluted the tragic footballer.

Last week members of an official fan club visited the Beijing side’s stadium to lay flowers on the pitch in a brief ceremony.

Tiote spent the bulk of his career with Newcastle, amassing 156 appearances over seven seasons, and he also played in 52 games for his national team and helped them win the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

Tiote begun his pro career in Belgium with Anderlecht, a period which included a loan spell with Roda JC.

From there he moved to FC Twente in the Netherlands, establishing himself as an effective defensive midfielder, making 86 appearances for the Dutch side.

He moved to the Premier League to join Newcastle in 2010 and made over 150 appearances for the team before leaving for China in February of this year.

In 2011, Tiote was part of one of the greatest comebacks in Premier League history. Arsenal jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Newcastle ended up scoring four straight goals and earning a draw. Tiote scored the equalizer with an 87th-minute volley from long range.

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez paid his tributes to Cheick Tiote in a statement on the club’s official website:

“It is with great sadness that I have this afternoon learned of Cheick’s death. In the all the time that I have known him, he was a true professional, dedicated and above all, a great man. Our hearts go out to his family and friends at such a sad time. Goodbye to a true professional”
