David Ortiz shot in Dominican Republic

Retired Red Sox baseball star David Ortiz has reportedly been shot in the Dominican Republic, and a suspect has been detained by police, according to local Dominican Republic media.

Ortiz was reportedly shot in the back and he is currently in surgery. In an interview posted by CDN 37, a man at the scene of the shooting said the bullet entered Ortiz’s back and exited his stomach. CDN 37 originally reported Ortiz’s leg was injured.

urveillance video from the bar that was posted on social media by El Nuevo Diario, a Dominican newspaper, appeared to show a man approach Ortiz from behind and fire a gun at his back. In the video, Ortiz collapses from his chair as those around him scatter.

Ortiz was with Dominican television personality Jhoel Lopez when he was shot, Dominican newspaper Listin Diario reported.

Ortiz’s father described the incident as a burglary attempt.

“They called to tell me that David is injured and that they took him to a medical center, but they did not tell me how he is or exactly where he was transferred,” Leo Ortiz, who is also in the Dominican Republic, told reporters. “At the moment, everything is confusing. I’m trying to find out where they took my son.”

Efforts to reach Ortiz’s representatives and Red Sox officials were not immediately successful.

Ortiz retired from baseball after the 2016 season and took a position with the Red Sox as a special assistant to the Fenway Sports Group. He also has worked for Fox Sports as a studio analyst before and after postseason games and has other business interests.

Since 2017, Ortiz has lived in Miami with his wife, Tiffany, and two of their three children. He also has a home in the Dominican Republic and spends time there.

Ortiz played 20 seasons in the majors, hitting .286 with 541 home runs and 1,768 RBIs. He was a member of three World Series championship teams with the Sox and a 10-time All-Star.
