Former Newcastle & Ivory Coast Star, Cheik Tiote Collapses, Dies In Training. FIFA, Newcastle Pay Respects

Former Newcastle and Cote d’Ivoire international midfielder Cheick Tiote died this morning after collapsing during a training session with his Chinese club. A spokesman for second-division side Beijing Enterprise confirmed the news to reporters. Tiote spent the bulk of his career with Newcastle, amassing 156 appearances over seven seasons, and he also played in 52 games for his national team and helped them win the 2015 African Cup of Nations.

Tiote begun his pro career in Belgium with Anderlecht, a period which included a loan spell with Roda JC.

From there he moved to FC Twente in the Netherlands, establishing himself as an effective defensive midfielder, making 86 appearances for the Dutch side.

He moved to the Premier League to join Newcastle in 2010 and made over 150 appearances for the team before leaving for China in February of this year.

In 2011, Tiote was part of one of the greatest comebacks in Premier League history. Arsenal jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Newcastle ended up scoring four straight goals and earning a draw. Tiote scored the equalizer with an 87th-minute volley from long range.

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez paid his tributes to Cheick Tiote in a statement on the club’s official website:

“It is with great sadness that I have this afternoon learned of Cheick’s death. In the all the time that I have known him, he was a true professional, dedicated and above all, a great man. Our hearts go out to his family and friends at such a sad time. Goodbye to a true professional”
