The Philadelphia Eagles won their first ever Super Bowl on Sunday night with a 41-33 win over the New England Patriots, and explosive running back, Jay Ajayi (Oluwadamilola Jonathan Ajayi), born in the UK to Nigerian parents, played a huge role in the win. The 24-year-old played his part with 57 rushing yards as the Eagles upset the New England Patriots in Minnesota denying them a third ring in four years and a sixth title in 17 seasons.
“Hopefully it will inspire some people, just from the journey, from the challenges that I’ve been through, the adversity,” said Ajayi, who was surprisingly traded by the Miami Dolphins in October.
“To still be at this point, to still be able to touch and kiss that Lombardi Trophy and understand I’m a Super Bowl champion, (it’s the) greatest feeling in the world, I’m so blessed. I pray that someone is inspired by it.” Ajayi added after the win.
Jay Ajayi was born in East London in 1993 to Nigerian parents and studied at schools near to the family home in Essex. His family moved to Maryland, USA, when he was seven and they later relocated to Texas.
He started playing American Football for his high school in Frisco, north of Dallas, Texas.
He progressed through the college system before moving to the Miami Dolphins in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. He was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in October 2017 after two-and-a-half seasons in Miami.
Ajayi became a key component of the Eagles’ ground attack. In the post-season he contributed 127 rushing yards even while battling an ankle injury.
