Yaounde, Cameroon, Sept 4th: Nigeria needed a win in Yaounde, Cameroon today and a no-win from Zambia tomorrow to wrap up qualification this week for the 2018 edition of the FIFA World Cup in Russia. A Vincent Aboubakar equalizer by penalty for Cameroon in the 75th minute to a Simon Moses goal for Nigeria in the 30th minute means Nigeria will have to wait a little longer but Nigeria remains firmly in control at the top of Group B.
A chastening 4-0 drubbing on friday in Uyo, Nigeria left the Indomitable Lions’ Russia 2018 hopes hanging by a thread, with only a victory today able to keep them alive. Following Friday’s clash, three Nigerian players – in the shape of Victor Moses, Wilfred Ndidi and Leon Balogun – were all chosen in CAF’s best XI from the latest round of African games. No other side matched them.
Cameroon unsurprisingly shook up their starting line-up, with Arnaud Djoum, Yahia Banana, Fabrice Olinga and Jean-Pierre Nsame all coming in. Equally unsurprisingly, Gernit Rohr has taken the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach with Nigeria. Not one change in the line up that thrashed Cameroon 4:0 on friday.
Nigeria found their rhythm up front very early in the first half, with a great, natural flow coursing between their attacking elements. Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses and Moses Simon looking a nightmare to contain for the home side.Following some sloppy defending by Cameroon, Moses Simon pounced to put Nigeria ahead in the 30th minute.
However Vincent Aboubakar comes off the bench for Cameroon to slot away a penalty in the 75th against Nigeria clinically. The experienced
No 10 makes no mistake slotting it down the middle for the equalizer to bring a smile to the fans in Yaounde. The penalty was awarded when Ikechukwu Ezenwa brought down Arnaud Djoum.
Nigeria are on a run of 34 FIFA World Cup qualifiers without defeat, having not been beaten since losing to Angola in 2004 – with Germany 2006 the only finals they have missed in over two decades.
Nigeria have appeared in the finals of the FIFA World Cup on five occasions, the first being in 1994 where they reached the second round. They made their fifth appearance at the finals in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Cameroon have appeared in the finals of the FIFA World Cup on seven occasions, the first being in 1982 where they drew all three group games and finished in 17th position.

In 1990 Cameroon reached the Quarter-Final stage before being defeated 3-2 by England. Roger Milla at the age of 42, became the oldest player ever to appear in a World Cup finals at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
They have made their seventh appearance at the finals in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria Super Eagles vs Cameroon Indomitable Lions head to head
Cameroon have not beaten Nigeria in a ‘A’ match since 1989 (five defeats, one draw), which was a World Cup qualifier in this very stadium. The 1-0 win was achieved with a goal by the legendary figure of Francois Oman-Biyak.
They have claimed one other win against Nigeria since – following that one draw, as they were only separated by penalties. It brought them the 2000 CAF Africa Cup of Nations.
