Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho Completes Leicester City Move

Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho has completed the transfer to Leicester City Football Club from Manchester City for an undisclosed fee. The 20-year-old forward who just signed a five-year contract to 2022 at King Power Stadium could make his first Leicester City outing against Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday night. Kelechi Iheanacho becomes the fourth exciting addition to Craig Shakespeare’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

Iheanacho will wear the squad no.8 and joins fellow Nigeria internationals Wilfred Ndidi and Ahmed Musa among the Leicester City ranks, as the team continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly at home to German side Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday night.

Speaking to LCFC TV, Iheanacho said: “It feels good and I’m happy to be part of this team. I know the ambition of the team and speaking with the manager, he let me know what I need to do – to help the team achieve what they want. I was convinced and I’m happy to be here.

“I was happy speaking with the manager, knowing what the team wants. It gives me more confidence that I will fit in this team and hopefully I’ll achieve a lot.”

Leicester City manager Shakespeare added: “It’s a great signing for us. Kelechi is an enormously talented player that has shown a huge amount of promise at every level in which he’s played.

“We’ve tracked his progress for some time, so we know how much quality he’ll bring to the squad. He’s young, he’s hungry, he’s ready for the next stage of his development and I’m delighted that will be with Leicester City.”

Kelechi is a player of proven Premier League pedigree and he joins a Leicester City strike force bursting with talent ahead of the new Premier League campaign, which kicks off away to Arsenal on Friday 11 August.

Leicester City Wins Battle For Nigeria’s Kelechi Iheanacho In £25M (N1.25B) Move

Nigeria Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho who has scored 21 goals in 64 appearances for Manchester City is reportedly close to making a move worth £25 million (N1.25 billion) to former English Premier League champions Leicester City.

This is according to media reports on Thursday, which said the 20-year-old is in advanced talks with the Foxes and is thought to be well interested in making the switch.

Iheanacho, who has been very impressive for the Super Eagles and since making his debut for Manchester City in 2015, has scored 21 goals in 64 games in all competitions.

He signed a new contract last August, which is to end in 2021, but saw his playing time limited by the arrival in January of Brazil forward Gabriel Jesus.

Manchester City’s signing of Gabriel Jesus was one meant to strike fear into Sergio Aguero. The Brazilian golden boy was brought in to compete with his new Argentine club-mate and lessen the pressure put on him by those at the club. And while it did just that, up until Jesus suffered a season-ending injury in February, it may have ultimately ended fellow forward Kelechi Iheanacho’s long-term future at the club.

Despite being directly involved in a goal every 74.9 minutes across all competitions for City since 2015-16 — 21 goals and seven assists — Iheanacho has been starved of first-team football by Pep Guardiola. Iheanacho managed just five Premier League starts last season under the Catalan, despite a spurt of goals in the first part of the campaign.

Through no fault of his own, his career has stagnated horribly and an Etihad exit has now become inevitable.

The position Iheanacho finds himself at City is not necessarily a negative one. Still only 20, with his athleticism, international experience and one of the most clinical set of goalscoring statistics in the English top-flight, Iheanacho has no shortage of potential suitors. The question has been who will he agree to sign for. We appear to have a twenty five million pounds answer sans Leicester City.
