The Serena Williams Building at more than 1 million square feet and covering three city blocks when completed in 2019 will be the biggest structure at Nike’s World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. “[Serena’s] record in tennis majors—an unmatched 23 singles titles—solidifies her stature as one of the greatest athletes of all time and one of the most inspiring people in sport,” Nike, Serena Williams’ longtime sponsor since 2003, said in a press release.
With 23 grand-slam titles, Serena Williams is the only tennis player in history (man or woman) to have won singles titles at least six times in three of the four grand-slam tournaments, and the only player ever to have won two of the four grand slams seven times each (seven Wimbledon titles and seven Australian Open titles). She also is nowhere near retirement.
Serena will aim to add another Grand Slam title to her record haul. Returning from maternity leave after the birth of daughter Alexis Olympia, defending champion Serena’s name features on the 2018 Australian Open entry list.
Serena Williams also expressed her gratitude on her Instagram account:
“Serenawilliams What a year it has been. First a grand slam win followed by a awesome baby… than the most magical wedding. What next? How about a building!!… Nike announced yesterday that one of its new world headquarters buildings will be named after me. It will be the biggest on campus and is scheduled to open in 2019. I am honored and grateful! #TeamNike @nike”
