Trump HUD Removes Anti-Discrimination Language From Mission Statement

Washington, D.C., USA: Not long after Trump immigration, USCIS, removed “Nation Of Immigrants” from it’s mission statement, the administration’s Ben Carson led Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is removing language from its mission statement that promises to create “inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination,”.

The new mission statement was sent out to HUD employees in a March 5 memo by Amy Thompson, the department’s assistant secretary for public affairs.

The new statement reads:

“HUD’s mission is to ensure Americans have access to fair, affordable housing and opportunities to achieve self-sufficiency, thereby strengthening our communities and nation.”

The old mission statement reads:.

“HUD’s mission is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. HUD is working to strengthen the housing market to bolster the economy and protect consumers; meet the need for quality affordable rental homes; utilize housing as a platform for improving quality of life; build inclusive and sustainable communities free from discrimination, and transform the way HUD does business.”

HUD – the agency charged with ensuring equal access to housing – is not the only federal agency changing its mission under President Donald Trump. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services director recently informed employees that it was removing the phrase “America’s promise as a nation of immigrants” from its mission statement.

Under President Barack Obama, HUD made advancing lesbian, gay, bisaxual, transgender and queer rights a priority. Shaun Donovan, who served as Obama’s first HUD secretary, was the first sitting Cabinet official in history to publicly support marriage equality.

The agency worked to prohibit discrimination by HUD-funded housing authorities, recognized state and local laws that are more LGBTQ-friendly than federal ones and raised awareness of resources available to the LGBTQ community.

Last year, Ben Carson said he didn’t want low-income Americans receiving federal assistance to feel too “comfortable” in their housing because it might make them say, “I’ll just stay here. They will take care of me.”

Carson recently came under scrutiny for the revelation that his office was set to be redecorated with a $31,000 dining room set. The secretary has claimed he knew nothing about the order.

Vanita Gupta Verified account @vanitaguptaCR: From the same man who said enslaved Africans were immigrants…HUD is at least honest that Carson is removing the promise of inclusive communities free from discrimination from its mission statement to align with the Trump administration’s priorities..

Kaivan Shroff @KaivanShroff: Ben Carson supported Trump cutting over $6 billion in HUD funding, while he used taxpayer money to buy a $31,000 table for his office. RT if you DEMAND #CarsonResign.

Human Rights Campaign Verified account @HRC: Ben Carson, a notorious anti-LGBTQ member of the Trump-Pence administration, just removed anti-discrimination language from HUD’s mission statement.

Ken Olin Verified account @kenolin1: These are some really bad guys: Donald J. Trump, Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, Wayne LaPierre, Mike Pence, Dana Loesch, Ted Cruz, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage, Newt Gingrich, Bill O’Reilly, Rick Perry, Wilbur Ross, John Kelly, Scott Pruitt, Betsy DeVos, Ben Carson, Jared Kushner. The list goes on-

Jennifer Rubin Verified account @JRubinBlogger: I am losing track of just the financial corruption scandals: Carson furniture; Pruitt, Zinke and Mnuchin airlines; Shalukin vacation/falsification, Jared (an entire universe until itself), Trump emoluments and conflicts. Any others?

Andy Thorburn Verified account @AndyThorburnCA: Ben Carson spent $31,561 on a table. It was purchased in the midst of HUD cuts to the tune of $8.8 billion. If this isn’t a perfect illustration of the Trump admin, I don’t know what is.

Barbra Streisand Verified account @BarbraStreisand: They complain about a $31,000 dining room set for Ben Carson. What about the weekend retreats going to Mar-a-Lago? If Trump is so rich why doesn’t he offer to pay for that himself?

Ana Navarro Verified account @ananavarro: Ben Carson says running HUD harder than brain surgery. He was good at one, sucks at the other; Trump has miraculously held the same position on something -tariffs- for more than a day; Oscars were a snooze; Sam Nunberg nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a drama.

Brian Krassenstein @krassenstein: At the same time as The Trump admin tried cutting the HUD budget, HUD officials paid $31,000 in taxpayer dollars for a new dining room set for the office of Ben Carson. I just bought a dining room set for $2600 and thought that was expensive…
Meanwhile people are homeless.

Liz @Charmed246: Many of those homeless people are vets. Many of them have no healthcare. But hey, $31K for an ofc dining room set for Ben Carson, good deal.

Dan Sloan @sloantone: The level of corruption and the number of scum bags in the Trump orbit and administration is staggering. Plus I cannot stand Ben Carson, he is painful to watch and listen to.

Carolyn Gil @OneSardine: Well this just helps people like Trump and Kushner who made their bread and butter discriminating. Let’s face it, Carson was put in that position because he would do their bidding.

Emily A. Benfer @emilyabenfer: Confirming the #Trump administration goal of ending #CivilRights, @SecretaryCarson doesn’t think communities should be “free from discrimination” or “inclusive” so he’s changing the @HUDgov
Mission. What’s next: #redlining #nimbyism restrictive zoning.

Phunky Fresh @FreshPhunky: Amazing that @SecretaryCarson will now be the face of #racial #discrimination in #housing – Ben Carson’s Housing Department Removes Commitment to Discrimination-Free Communities From Mission Statement #racism #Trump #HUD #poverty.

Suzanne Trimel @STrimel: Paging Dr. Carson. Maybe he can explain to the Trump knuckleheads what lead in the blood means for young kids and why they must act urgently. This is infuriating. Two. Damn. Years.

Melonia #BoycottNRA #Resist @MeloniaSherbon: This is most disturbing, reflecting the mission of Trump’s America.

Marie Sageer @SageerMarie: When African Americans choose to negate Civil rights fought so hard for by other African Americans, they’re truly worse than trump & friends. Carson not only a disgrace to country but to his own. A horror. @RealBenCarson @SecretaryCarson @repjohnlewis.

John Allen @JFrankAllen: Just another bought and paid for “friend of Trump” doing the white racists work as an UNCLE TOM. Remember he referenced slave ships that brought unwilling African Americans to these shores to work as slaves as “immigrants that arrived by ship!”Optics: Carson is a sellout to race.

Tabithia Moore @mooretabithia31: Ben Carson said that poverty is a “state of mind” and that affordable housing for the poor are “too comfortable”. Trump wanted him as housing secretary because they’re both trash.

That Dude @Dude4Truth: Ben Carson, Omarosa, Sheriff Clarke. These apparently are the only black people Trump approves of. Speaks volumes about his judge of character.

Ron Perlman Verified account @perlmutations: To all my friends and family of color, please help me out with what I wanna say here but cannot!

BonitaMiddleSchool @BonitaSMCA Congrats to Peyton McManus for winning the highly coveted Ben Carson’s scholarship!
#LoveLeeSchools #BenCarson.

Jennifer L @happywife669: Trump wanted a house N and Ben Carson was happy to be that for him. It saddens me because my mother worked hard for HUD in Chicago and the Urban League but today I’m sure she’s spinning in her grave. Shame on him and all of those who choose money over Integrity. Truly sad.

Brian Krassenstein @krassenstein: Ben Carson has just stripped HUD’s mission statement of language promising ‘inclusive communities’ that are ‘free from discrimination’. Welcome back 1955! America is no longer a nation who cares about anyone worth under $1 million.

Rachel Goodman @rachelegoodman1: Just in time for the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act!Just in time for the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act!

CandaceTX™ @CandaceTX: #BenCarson It’s always weird when a brilliant neurosurgeon comes off sounding as if he could use a brilliant neurosurgeon…

sev spin @sevspin: Remember when they changed the mission statement of the USCIS and removed “nation of immigrants” last week!? Soon they will change the constitution and we will have a president for life as Trump wishes. #TrumpMafia #BenCarson #VoteThemOut

Amy Siskind Verified account @Amy_Siskind: This regime continues to tear the fabric of our country, week after week.

Eman Rimawi @Eman_Rimawi: they already discriminate against folks like me. I guess not having legs and a knee isn’t enough! Asshats @HUDgov #BenCarson

B Jeter @bridgejeter: Trump: “Ben, I need you to change that mission statement” Uncle Ben: “Yessah massah” #Housenegro #Chronicles #BenCarson #trump

Amber G @turnerclick: I am just wondering what ACTUAL work @HUDgov #BenCarson has done so far thr only notable things have been *Allowing his kids to make money from his position *Buying an ugly ass $30k dining set *Edit a Mission Statement in favor of Trumps racist agenda. Am I missing anything?

Tim Wearing @TimWearing: The @realDonaldTrump White House has to be the best place for an inept or corrupt person to work, because no matter what you’re caught doing, there are so many scandals people will forget about it in a few days. #maga #SamNunberg #KellyanneConway #BenCarson #JaredKushner #Trump

EARLIER: Trump Immigration, USCIS, Removes “Nation Of Immigrants” From Mission Statement “Effective Immediately” – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, USCIS, altered its mission statement on Thursday by taking out a reference to USA as a “nation of immigrants”. Jonathan Withington, USCIS Chief of Media Relations, said the new mission statement is “effective immediately.”

The new mission statement reads: “U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services administers the nation’s lawful immigration system, safeguarding its integrity and promise by efficiently and fairly adjudicating requests for immigration benefits while protecting Americans, securing the homeland, and honoring our values.”

The previous mission statement read: “USCIS secures America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system.”

The agency said the new mission statement focuses on the priorities of “fairness, lawfulness and efficiency.”

USCIS Director L. Francis Cissna defended the changes in an email to staff on Thursday:

“In particular, referring to applicants and petitioners for immigration benefits, and the beneficiaries of such applications and petitions, as ‘customers’ promotes an institutional culture that emphasizes the ultimate satisfaction of applicants and petitioners, rather than the correct adjudication of such applications and petitions according to the law,” he wrote.

“The statement speaks for itself and clearly defines the agency’s role in our country’s lawful immigration system and commitment we have to the American people,” he added.

USCIS is the administrative arm of the Department of Homeland Security, which includes appellate review. It is the lead U.S. agency tasked with granting citizenship to would-be Americans.

Sen. Patrick Leahy Verified account @SenatorLeahy: “The President can erase “nation of immigrants” from the #USCIS mission statement, but he cannot erase our nation’s legacy or our shared #American values. Thankfully, both will long outlast Pres. #Trump.”
